Catalyst Recovery Project - Wilton T8

Following a competitive tendering process, KHI has been awarded a project by Artenius UK Ltd (formerly AdvanSA) for the detail design of a catalyst recovery plant at the Wilton International chemicals complex.

The catalyst recovery unit, which is based on standard technology used on modern PTA plants, will remake fresh catalyst solution using recovered catalyst and some basic raw materials, in addition to recycling the Terephthalic Acid (TA) solids lost in the effluent purge stream.

The new facility will deliver both economic and environmental benefits to the T8 PTA Operations by reducing overall catalyst usage and recycling TA solids back into the plant process stream for conversion to end product.

ISO 9001 Re-certification identifies enthusiasm of K Home staff

Following a very thorough 3 day audit by external consultants Det Norske Veritas (DNV), K Home International Limited has successfully been re-certified to the international quality standard ISO 9001 for provision of engineering, procurement and project/construction management services.

K Home International has always worked with a philosophy of providing high quality services to its clients. This was formalised in 1992 when its procedures and systems were first accredited to ISO 9001, the internationally recognised symbol of quality.

KHI's operating procedures are encompassed within an overall Quality Management System (QMS), which receives regular external audits from DNV throughout the year. The audit to gain re-certification, however, is carried out every three years and involves a probing analysis across all aspects of the Company's activities including engineering design, project management and construction management. This was the first re-certification since KHI incorporated Construction Management into the ISO 9001 certificate and it passed with flying colours.

DNV's audit report concluded that it found no non-conformities or observations and went on to comment KHI has a 'stable and mature management system' and that the staff had an 'enthusiastic engagement in activities'.

'The manner in which the company passed this re-certification is a credit to the dedication and quality of employees at K Home International. Our Company remains committed to adding value to its customers by providing high quality services' said Chairman Andrew Home, 'This re-certification however does not mean we will not rest on our laurels because we must always be looking for continuous improvement'.

Further information about KHI's Quality Management Systems can be obtained from Mr. Neal Granycome, QA Manager upon request - neal.granycome@khomeint.com

Ceremony marks start of construction work on £15m polymer plant

A GROUNDBREAKING ceremony has taken place to mark the start of construction work on a fluorinated polymer plant in the North-West of England.

The plant, near Blackpool, in Lancashire, is being designed and built for the Asahi Glass Company, of Japan, by K Home International Limited, of Teesside, in a contract worth £15m.

Yesterday, Takashizu Minato, President & CEO of Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers UK Limited, and Ken Home, Chairman and CEO of K Home International, planted a tree to mark the start of the FCH-1 building project.

When production starts in early 2007, the plant will help meet increased worldwide demand for the fluorinated resin ETFE, which is widely used as insulating material for electrical wiring and as a raw material in the production of films.

Asahi is one of the world’s leading producers of fluorochemicals and fluoropolymer materials. The ETFE plant – which will be adjacent to Asahi’s existing PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) facility in Thornton-Cleveleys – represents its biggest investment outside of Japan since it acquired the fluorinated resin business in Europe and the US, from ICI, in 1999.

K Home International (KHI), based in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, was appointed as engineering design, procurement and construction contractor, on a risk-reward partnership agreement, after initially being asked by Asahi to carry out a front end study of the plant, including capital cost estimate and implementation plan. It also assisted in the selection of Mowlem as installation contractor.

KHI director Ian Pearey said: “Asahi came to us because of our recognised capabilities in PDMS 3D-modelling. Our design team used Asahi’s ETFE plant in Japan as a template to create a full-scale model of the UK plant, which included precise detail of all pipe and steelwork and meant we could achieve the highest possible degree of surety.

“The plant in Japan is, as you would expect, built to a very high standard, but one of our keys tasks is to ensure that all specifications and codes, particularly those relating to pipework and pressure vessels, are translated to meet European standards, as well as those applying to construction in Asia.”

In recent years, worldwide demand for ETFE has increased sharply as a result of new applications in the automotive and construction sectors, significantly in European markets. Second phase development to double capacity at the Thornton-Cleveleys plant is earmarked for 2010.

Senior Executive Officer of Asahi Glass Michiyoshi Kaino who travelled from Japan for the ceremony stated that ‘Customer satisfaction is a key objective and this plant will enable us to better serve our important customers in Europe’.

KHI Chairman Ken Home said: “We are immensely proud to be associated with this project, and the fact we have entered into a shared risk-reward framework with Asahi is a measure of both our commitment to the project and confidence of completing the design and building programme in the most cost effective way possible.”

Geoff Conroy, Project Manager for ASAHI Glass said: ‘This is a very challenging project and will be delivered on a shared risk basis between AGFP and KHI. We have a strong project team, a flexible contract and we are supported by advanced project management techniques’

KHI welcomes the Northeast's contribution to renewable fuels

KHI is supporting the Northeast Biofuels Dinner and exhibition at Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield on 2 June 2005.

This prestigious event demonstrates the commitment of the North East business community to developing a sustainable biofuels industry in the region.  The Northeast Biofuels group involves all interested parties in establishing a viable biofuel industry from farmers through to forecourt delivery of fuel, a true fuel 'from seed to tank'.

KHI welcomes the development of this new industry sector.  The company has recently been involved with the £25m Biodiesel Plant being constructed in Teesside and is actively supporting the assessment of establishing a rape seed crushing plant for biodiesel manufacture in the Durham-Tees Valley.

The development of achievable sustainable energy practices is key to the UK's future energy policy and the forthcoming dinner is seen as a key indicator to how seriously the region is addressing the issue.  For further information about Northeast Biofuels click here.
